A Free Guide for Adult Educators: 20 Tools to Help Learners Keep Learning

Written by Jon Holland | Sep 22, 2026, 7:50:33 AM

You wrap up a great session. People nod, take notes, tell you it changed how they think.

Three weeks later, most of it's gone.

That's the real challenge in adult education. Keeping people learning once you've left the room. Content is the easy part.

A new free guide, published by the Erasmus+ project Empower - Lifelong Learning Skills for Educational Trainers in Europe, tackles exactly that. It's called the Lifelong Learning Facilitator's Guide. It's 70 pages, free and gives you 20 ready-to-use tools for building the skills that keep people learning long after a course ends.

What is the Lifelong Learning Facilitator's Guide?

It's a practical toolkit for adult education professionals, built on Self-Determination Theory. That theory identifies three psychological needs that decide whether motivation actually sticks: connection, competence and control. The guide turns that research into a four-phase learning journey and 20 facilitation tools you can use straight away, each with its own steps, timing, a facilitation note and a printable template.

"The measure of a good session isn't how much content you covered," says Joan Urgell, Learnlife Trainer and Empower Lead. "It's whether people leave with more connection, competence and control than they had walking in. Because that's what decides whether they come back to learn on their own."

What do the 20 tools cover?

Every tool sits under one of three pillars.

Pillar What it builds
Socio-emotional skills Connection with others, self-awareness, the relational side of learning
Self-directed learning Competence, ownership, the ability to set and pursue your own learning goals
Digital wellbeing Control over attention and habits in a world designed to fragment both

Each tool is ready to run: steps, timing, a note for the facilitator, and a template you can print and hand out.

Why does the guide focus on digital wellbeing?

Because the partners kept seeing the same thing in their own sessions. Research cited in the guide puts average sustained attention on a screen at around 47 seconds.

The guide doesn't respond to that by telling people to put their phones away. Instead, the digital wellbeing tools ask each person to look honestly at their own habits, then design the environment that protects their own focus. Small, personal, and something they can actually keep doing after the workshop ends.

Where did the guide come from?

It was built over a year with adult education professionals in Romania and Spain: online workshops plus a mobility that brought 18 facilitators together at Learnlife in Barcelona. Their input feeds directly into a strategy bank covering the ten executive functions, so the tools are grounded in what actually works in a room, not just theory.
